Uzbek(?) Rug, Central Asia, late 19th century, 3' 4"x 5' 7"

An archaic composition with an overall eyedazzling pattern of great interest. Framed by an equally simple and appropriately archic compartmented border with each compartment containing an eight pointed star. The field pattern can be read in more than one way, with the interlocking design formed in the reciprocal space between what is apparently the primary pattern contained in boxes (see the third detail photo of the field, below). The colours are apparently all derived from natural dyes and the condition is immaculate with virtually full pile, and no repairs.
