Beshir Prayer Rug, Central Asia
(Middle Amu Darya Region), 19th century,
4'1" x 6'4", $7700
Beshir style prayer rugs are some
of the most prestigious and highly collectible
pile weavings to emerge from Central Asia.
TribalSource is proud to present this very
graphic and well composed example. Typically
patterned with the "heads and
shoulders" motif in the mihrab, this example
is distinguished by spacious drawing contrasted
against the desirable white field background.
The secondary and tertiary
element which float in the field as well as adorn
the interiors of the primary motifs are quite
attractive and contribute to an overall effect, a
composition of tribal elements which is rarely
seen in these usually very formal weaving which
results in a somewhat sterile appearance.
I really like the shimmering
prongs which emanate from the top of the mihrab
as well as the differing shades of blue and blue
green which dominate both the field and border
elements. The weave is quite nice as well, with
an extremely patinated back suggesting real age.
COLORS -- All natural dyes
CONDITION -- Good condition,
slight repairs at the ends, no holes, no stains.
No obvious or hidden flaws. This is an antique
weaving, therefore it cannot be expected that it
will be in "new condition." The terms
used for describing condition are consistent with
common usage in the marketplaces all over the
world. Obvious flaws including repair, holes and
stains WILL BE noted in all descriptions.
