Symmetrical knot on a wool foundation
From the Turkish for "bed", yataks are
rugs of a squarish format with a low knot count,
having loosely spun, long piled wool on a
foundation characterized by a number of weft
shoots. The magical tactile value of this type of
rugs is closely connected to its specific
construction. The design on this particular yatak
is composed of four parallel rows of octagons
containing a hooked framework, probably of early
origin, seen also on a 14th century Florentine
fresco (see K.Erdmann, Europa und der
Orientteppich, Mainz, 1962, plate 12).
