Lot Nr.: 180
Description: GAZIANTEP
Origin: East Anatolia,
ca. first half 19th century
Size: ca. 206 x 134 cm
Estimate EUR: 7,000
A powerful solid cross, surrounded by long
horizontal hooks, dominates each of the three
rectangles in the field of this magnificently
coloured carpet, which originated in the
Gaziantep region that is mostly populated by
Kurds. A colourful border of diagonal stripes
surrounds not just the field but also the three
compartments. Rosettes alternate with star
shapes, octagons and hooked diamonds in the
border. The exceptional brilliance of the colours
seems to indicate that most of the dyed wool used
in this carpet was originally white.
Repiled end finishes, the corroded black-brown
outlines have been repiled, otherwise in good
condition.
