Of "Sultan's Head" design, full pile
throughout, selvages frayed, overall very good
condition
5ft.2in. x 3ft.6in. (156cm. x 106cm.)
Lot Notes The knot count is 9H x 10V per cm. sq.
The present lot is the only Koum Kapi rug of
three in this sale that bears the actual
signature of Zareh Penyamin within one of the
central metal-thread palmettes. Zareh is still
widely considered to have been the leading master
weaver of his time within the Armenian workshops
of Istanbul. His attention to draftsmanship and
detail are a few of the many attributes which are
associated with his workmanship. A very similar
example was sold in these Rooms, 16 October 2003,
lot 150.
