Syrian Chessboard Carpet Fragment 16th Century Lot 1Tufenkian Carpets Area Rug Sale.

Origin: Damascus in Ottomen Syria.

JBOC Comments: My rough transltion: "Lot 1 designation: Chessboard Carpet Fragment country of origin: Syria, Damascus, 16th century Dimensions: approx. 98 x 59 cm estimate price in EUR: 3.000 € the important fragment is the left lower corner of a so-called "Chessboard" carpet. Only about 30 complete copies, and a unknown number of fragments, survived. It is assumed that this group of carpets developed in the workshops of Damascus."

Das bedeutende Fragment ist die linke untere Ecke eines sogenannten "Schachbrett"-Teppichs. Nur etwa 30 vollständige Exemplare, und eine nicht genau bekannte Anzahl von Fragmenten, haben überlebt. Es wird vermutet, daß diese Teppichgruppe in den Werkstätten von Damaskus entstand. Elemente des streng symmetrisch aufgebauten Musters, hier auf kirschrotem Grund und kombiniert mit einer blaugrünen Bordüre aus weißen Kartuschen und roten Rauten, finden sich auch in anderen Bereichen der islamischen Kunst (Mosaiken, Holzschnitzereien). ­ Allseits beschnitten, einige Flecken, insgesamt jedoch in Anbetracht des hohen Alters gut erhalten.
