19TH C. PERSIAN HANGING For a tent, made in Resht
on the Caspian Sea, the central cartouche with
four quails surrounded by further birds, flowers
partly on a scarlet ground and partly on navy
blue, the outer pistachio border with C scroll
feathers, flowers and birds, a sun with a face at
both ends, the guard stripes of soft orange, all
applique in wool facecloth and silk chainstitch
embroidery, lined with blue cotton, 6ft 5 in x 4
ft 7 in
Comments: In Persia, as all over the East, rulers
were equipped with elaborate tents, whether for
military campaigns, hunting or diplomatic
missions. The technique used is as follows: A
flower shape is cut from the base cloth. The
flower shape is then cut from another coloured
facecloth and inserted into the main panel from
behind. It is then chain stitched in place. And
so on. Lovely colours, bright and clear , but not
too bright.
Condition: Very good. There are little holes and
markings here and there but nothing large and
with all the design and colour you just
don’t notice.
Price: £1000.00
$1,800.00
