Dear Barry,
Hi. I hope this e-mail finds you well. A friend of mine asked me to give him some information on Saber carpets of Mashad. I couldn't find much information. Usually, the first place I turn into, is spongobongo. In your very informative website, I did see a picture of a very fine Saber, but not any text or written information. I thought, maybe I could share some information with the friends on your site. Attached, you may find few pictures for a pair of very fine Mashad carpets which are in my stock in Los Angeles. KPSI (knot/square inch) is 1024 or so called 90 Raj, in Tabriz weaving scale. The knots are symmetrical. The size for each rug is 360x250 cm. Each rug has more than 14,000,000 knots. It took two years for each piece to be woven by two men master weavers. They completed this pair in the year 2001. They have the inscription of the weaver which is "Saber", a master weaver who migrated in early 1900 from the city of Tabriz to the city of Mashad, in which there is a holly Shrine of Imam Reza. Saber wanted to live under Imam Reza's so called "Shadow", to be blessed by him. He wove very fine carpets for the court, museums, and very famous and rich people. Saber died in 1977. His workshop manager, with a written permission from Saber family, is following his work and makes few fine pieces each year. He is maintaining the same quality standards. All the rugs are made on natural silk foundation (silk warp). The pile is consisted of kork and natural silk. Many of the flowers are made of natural silk. The colors are natural. You may notice from the picture that there is one-inch flatweave around the carpet made of silk to protect the edges from being worn out. This is to save the edges from any kind of damages which may occur. This is typical of very fine Mashad weaving culture.
Thank you.
