In its original condition, these carpets are
typlified by soft fleecy pile, a palette that
often relies heavily on a slightly corrosive
orange-brown or dark green field covered with
relatively self-contained floral sprays or
stylized shrubs. These floral designs have close
similiarities with those of some vase carpets,
but the wool and structure of this group are
dramatically different. As in vase carpets,
medallions are rare. The present lot has a small
central medallion placed on top of and in no way
linked in to the field design. This unusual
feature along with the dramatic drawing make this
a superb example of early Khorassan weaving.
