At the time of the founding of the Safavid Dynasty the Afshar where one of the most powerful Azeri Turkmen allies of the Safavi. In the reign of Shah Abbass the great the Afshar revolted and were crushed by the Safavi. To weaken their ability to contest the Safavi Abbas broke the tribe up and moved them around. Many of the Qizilbash of Afghanistan still speak a Persianate dialect of Afshari.
