John Sommer on felt
at the TM

Dr. John Sommer expert on
the Kirghiz gave a presentation at the Textile
Museum on felt and felt making. Sommer is a
retired physician and an active rug collector. He
is President of SFBARS (San Francisco Bay Area
Rug Society) and is a board member of the Textile
Museum. He has recently authored a highly
acclaimed book on Kirghis reed screens(Sommer,
John L.: The Kyrgyz and Their Reed Screens ;
Fremont: 1996.). John also delivered a talk
called "Kirghiz" at ACOR 3
in Santa Monica in 1996.
John showed the differences
between applied felt and cut felt as well as the
various ways that the felt is made.

of people including Sally Hoffman seen here
showing pieces from her collection. Sally was
accompanied by her husband Bob noted animal
expert from the National History Museum of the
Smithsonian . |

John amply illustrated his
lecture with slides and a bounty of both new and
old pieces from his personal collection. |
|
As always John draws a
crowd when he is at the Textile Museum, Here he
is explaining things after his lecture. His wife
Donna can be seen to the far left. |
