The primary entrances to
the Qanat are called Payab. There are 5 Payabs but this
is the only one that has been restored.
Here I am in the Qanat
of Kish Island with my good friend Parviz
Alami. The Qanat of Kish Island is a 15 kilometer
long underground city and water system dating back two
thousand years.
From the Payab tunnels
branch off to different areas.
To make the passages
safe for casual visitors they have installed in well
traveled areas a stone and mortar lining.
Despite the safety
additions one can easily see the original Qanat. Here we
look up a well shaft that was hand dug through Coral. The
Island is primarily coral.
Underneath the coral is
this layer and here we can see an original section
without the stone and mortar lining.
Look carefully and you
can make out the hidden secret of Kish. The cold clear
drinkable water that collects in the Qanat.
