Description
I have recently returned from a buying trip. I carried some small
things and had a rug left to sell. This will be a small sale but by
next Sunday the larger and more expensive items will begin to appear.
Here is a very charming Kazak prayer rug with a bold captivating
pattern measuring 35in. X 54 inches. This little gem of a Kazak prayer
rug was no doubt an item of personal use and devotion. I have seldom if
ever seen a prayer rug that looked truly good from both directions.
Infact this little Kazak prayer rug may look better from the top down
than it does from the bottom up! This weaving has red wefts and is
woven at a density of approximately 80 KSI, very tight indeed for a
kazak.
The dyes are all vegetable and
this weaving probably dates to the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. The
floating mihrab design with 'feet' makes this one of the most desirable
types of Caucasian prayer rug to own.
This weaving is similar to
several Kazak examples published in Ralph Kaffels’ book on Caucasian
prayer rugs, a book filled with masterpieces.
This is a rare brilliantly
colored Caucasian prayer rug in good condition. The pile is medium
length and the blues are particularly vivid against the perfectly
balanced reds. The pile is short in the center areas.
There is a wonderful aqua
green along with a wonderful vivid red, all vegetable dyes. This is a
fine rug, one that is valuable and desirable now
