Antique Meshed Baluch Saddle Rug

1 ft. 11 in. x 1 ft. 6 in.

This is an Antique Persian Baluch saddle rug from the Meshed area. The key to my attribution is dye usage. In antique Baluch rugs Afghan Baluch have much more brown as a general rule and very rarely do they have a good clear yellow. Rugs from Meshed usually have mostly red and blue with white and a good clear yellow. I call this a saddle rug because it has a pommel slit.

Structure: Asymmetrical knot open to the left. 8 knots per horizontal inch and 13 knots per vertical inch. 104 per square inch (1612 per square decimeter). Mildly depressed warps.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 2 ply Wool, ivory.

Weft: 2 shots, 2 ply dark brown wool.

Pile: 2 Wool singles.

Ends: Top: 4 inch plain weave triangular corner skirts with warp fringe. Bottom: reduced.

Selvages: 4 cord wrapped into two.

Further Notes: Very good condition. Shows minor wear, has corrosive browns and blacks, minor loss of a few field knots. The color in this rug is the quintessential Meshed Baluch. The reds and blues are super, and the yellow is seen in the very best rugs of this type.

Baluch Pile Bag Face, mid 20th century

Size: 2 ft. 5 in. x 2 ft. 8 in.

This a very pretty tribal rug from one of the villages in Northeast Iran in the province of Khorasan. The border is a traditional border in the Turbat-i-Haydari. The pattern is reminiscent of a Turkoman infinite repeat pattern but it is more of a repetitive design repeat. It is a good thick sturdy village rug that is both attractive and utilitarian.

This is a handmade Baluch bag face. It dates to the mid 20th century.
