Ali Akbar Velayati is a moderate or pragmatic conservative. Still he is conservative enough that he is counted as a conservative in Iran. Ideologically he is seen as to the right of Former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Some on the conservative side have touted Velayati as a way to draw off support that would otherwise go to Rafsanjani. A complicating factor is the friendship between Velayati and Rafsanjani that cause many to speculate what Velayati will do if Rafsanjani enters the race. There is some speculation that if the race looks like a choice between Velayati's former aide Ali Larijani or his former boss Rafsanjani Velayati would throw in with Rafsanjani.
