CATALOGUE NOTE
Similar tiles depicting dragons and phoenixes have been found at Takht-i Sulaiman ("Throne of Solomon"), the summer palace of the Mongol Ilkhan, Abakha, constructed in the 1270s in the mountainous region around Lake Urmia south of Tabriz. A number survive in museum collections in Europe and North America, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Washington, and the Museum für Islamische Kunst, Berlin (see Komaroff and Carboni 2002, p.95, figs. 101 and 102, and p.175, fig. 204). This example is unusual in being intact with original gilding.

JBOC Comments:

I note a marked similarity bethween the above tile and the left star in this collection. I can understabd why the catalog says "Mina'i or Lajvardina" in reference to the above tile however I lean towards Mina'i I do not think the color is right to be Lajvardina. I also note that Stefano Carboni at the Met does really nice work.
