Often tiles are identifiable.
They can be linked by design to Shrines and
Mosques. The tile to the right appears to be
related to the tiles of the Eyup Shrine and
Mosque. The Eyup was the first Mosque built in
Istanbul after the Moslems took Istanbul.

This tile is part of
a group that was intended for the mosque and
turbe complex at Eyup in Istanbul. There are a
number of similar examples to be found in public
and private collections: a large panel from the
baths at Eyup in the Victoria and Albert Museum;
two panels of eight in the Louvre; a panel of ten
in the Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon (L'Art de
l'Orient Islamique, Collection de la Fondation
Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, 1963, no.66); a
panel of four in the David Collection, Copenhagen
(Atasoy & Raby 1989, no.477); and others in
the Ashmolean Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Cinili
Kosk in Istanbul and the Museum of Islamic Art in
Cairo. A panel of eight sold in these rooms, 11th
