decorated in two shades of cobalt-blue, relief
red, turquoise and green outlined in black with
bold saz leaves overlapping and intersected by
sprigs of prunus blossom with lotus heads and
red-ground cartouches filled with tulips and
carnations

CATALOGUE NOTE
These tiles are part of a well-known group from
the Eyup shrine and mosque complex on the Golden
Horn in Istanbul. There are a number of similar
examples to be found in public and private
collections: a large panel from the baths at Eyup
in the Victoria and Albert Museum; two panels of
eight in the Louvre; a panel of ten in the
Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; a panel of four in
the David Collection, Copenhagen; and others in
the Ashmolean Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Cinili
Kosk in Istanbul and the Museum of Islamic Art in
Cairo. A similar panel sold in these rooms, 28th
April 2004, lot 112
