Harun Ar-Rashid (763-809) was the Caliph of Baghdad, who figures in many tales of the Arabian Nights, upon which the subject of the present work is based. Having had his vizier Jaffar the Barmecide killed, Harun forbade that Jaffar's name be mentioned in his presence. An old poet, however, dared to do so. The Caliph sentenced him to death and asked why he had contravened his orders. 'Master,' replied the poet, 'the king of kings is very powerful, but there is something that is more powerful still---good deeds.' And Harun, so taken by this reply, rewarded him with a vase of gold.
