Atiyeh
The Atiyeh has been
deeply involved in the rug trade for well
over 100 years. The Atiyeh are an Arab
Christian family. The ones I know best
are Tom and Leslie Atiyeh who run Atiyeh
International a importing and rug
producing company located in Washington
State. Tom's uncle Governor Victor G.
Atiyeh is the chairman of the board but
as best I can tell Tom and Leslie run the
day to day operations of the company. Up
until the fall of the Shah in 1979 Atiyeh
was a major producer in the province of
Kerman. Many of the antique Laver Kerman
rugs have that distinctively Atiyeh look.
After 1979 Atiyeh International set up
rug production in China (Communist
occupied Republic of China on the
mainland.). As far as Chinese rugs go
Atiyeh is as good as they get but I am
not a fan of new Chinese production.
Fortunately through the help of Vice
President Seyed Hossein Mar'ashi
Atiyeh International has again returned
to Kerman and is producing splendid rugs
near Rafsanjan.
One of the great
Designers of Persian carpets was Georges
Sirmadjieff who was manager and chief
designer for the Atiyeh's in the 1930s.
