CATALOGUE NOTE
Rugs woven by the Armenian weavers of the so-called 'Kum Kapi'
workshops in Istanbul usually derived their inspiration from Safavid
designs. This rug is unusual, however, due to its pictorial subject
matter, arranged in a landscape format and influenced by 19th century
European 'Orientalist' pictures. The scene depicts a group of
travellers and their mules in front of the Çesme of Sultan Ahmed III,
with the Blue Mosque in the distance.
