Asymmetrically knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation
Vaghirehs were used as samplers by weavers to show the various patterns within the repertoire of a given area. The overall graphic and chromatic balance of the best of these pieces makes us forget that we are dealing with design model. Indeed these samplers can often be much more fascinating than the actual rug, and, as in this very sweet example, can be considered works of art in their own right.

Size: 7 foot 10 inch by 14 foot.

Structure: Symmetrical knot. 6 knots per horizontal inch and 9 knots per vertical inch.  54 per square inch (837 per square decimeter).  

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 1 ply white cotton.

Weft: 1 shot white cotton.

Pile: 2 wool singles.

Ends: Post-hitch wharf binding with .5 inch warp fringe.

Selvages: 1 cord overcastting brown wool.

Handle: Medium,

Similar Rugs

The distinctive identifying feature to these rugs is that they are single wefted. Hamadan rugs and Malayer Rugs also use a single weft but they all use symmetrical knots. So if it looks like a Persian rug and uses a single weft then think Hamadan or Borchelu. Then use the knot type to tell you which it is.
