MARLA MALLETT: TEXTILES
Kurdish Kilim
Sauj Baluq area of West Persia.
Early 20th century. Wool. 4'4" x 11'2." Interlocked tapestry with
scattered brocade motifs. Weft-float end borders; twined heading cord
at the lower end. For anyone who enjoys idiosyncratic designing and
improvisation, this is the piece! It's even crazier when seen at first
hand! This piece exemplifies the differences between ethnographic
tribal weaving and mechanical market production. Who knows... Perhaps
it was made by a couple of rebellious teenagers. It is well crafted,
however, and a sturdy kilim that should withstand fairly heavy use. The
colors include lovely olive greens and natural browns along with madder
and indigo hues.
