Grand Mosque of Golpayegan,
Isfahan province

Grand Mosque of Golpayegan, Isfahan province
The major portion of the Golpayegan Masjid-e Jami
is of Seljuk origin and dates to the 11th century. It is noted for the
Kufic inscriptions in the brickwork.
Iranians, Germans Study Golpayegan
Mosque
Studies on Golpayegan Jame’ Mosque have begun, head of Isfahan Cultural
Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department’s Archeology Office said.
According to CHN, Mohsen Javari stated that a joint team of Iranian and
German experts is conducting studies on the ancient mosque dating back
to the Seljuqid Era (1029-1194).
Also, turning to archeological
excavations at an ancient Islamic site in Aran and Bidgol, the official
stated that “the lower section of the historic area, which was found
recently, is being examined.“ He noted that studies are being conducted
on 4,600 potsherds retrieved from the site. The history of Golpayegan
stretches back over 5,000 years. Extended across 1,945 square
kilometers, the city is located to the west of the capital city
Isfahan. http://www.iran-daily.com/1385/2795/html/panorama.htm

Irano-German Team to Study Golpayegan Mosque
An Irano-German team will launch the second round
of excavations in Golpayegan Grand Mosque, Isfahan province. Speaking
to ISNA, an expert with the Research Center for Preserving and
Repairing Historical and Cultural Monuments, Zatollah Nikzad also said
that the first round of the studies were conducted last year under a
one-year plan, following which the job of compiling documents and
architectural maps along with field research works started.
Referring to the need to undertake architectural studies in the mosque,
which may have influenced the development of Iranian architecture, he
said that the oldest section of the mosque is its unique dome, which
dates back to the Seljukid era (1037-1187 AD).
It uses special architecture as well as unique
plaster works, he said, adding that field works are currently centered
on the dome as well as its architecture in various eras.
Commenting on the theory whether the Seljukid era is the last period
determined for the mosque or whether it has been built over another
mosque, he said that field researches have revealed the existence of an
older mosque belonging to a period earlier than the Seljukid era.
Preliminary studies were conducted on its dome, he said, adding that
the second round of excavations in Golpayegan Grand Mosque will
continue in this section as well other sections.
The time for starting the second round of the
studies has not yet been fixed since it depends on financial issues and
obtaining permit. However, the project is on this year’s agenda, Nikzad
concluded. History of Golpayegan goes back to over 5,000 years.
Sprawling over an area of 1,945 square kilometers, the city is located
to the west of the provincial capital Isfahan. http://www.iran-daily.com/1386/2921/html/art.htm
