Townsend Hoopes died September 20, 2004 at
the age of 82. I had the honor to know Hoopes but
I won't be presumptuous to call us friends. I
read his books and when I had questions he would
give thoughtful measured answers. He tended to
answer questions in a non-political almost
detached sense as if he could separate himself
from the fight and speak objectively. I admired
that about him. I wish I had bothered to ask
him about his name. Hoopes & Townsend was an
old Nut & Bolt manufacturer in Philadelphia.
I should have but we always focused on foreign
affairs. He was especially helpful to me in
understanding the military exchanges between
India and Pakistan.
Townsend Hoopes was active in the Truman,
Kennedy, and Johnson administrations and was
Undersecretary of the Air Force.
