Notes on Gholam Hossein Karbaschi

The Servants of Construction Party was an important part of President Khatami's 2nd of Khordad movement Khatami continued the practice begun by Rafsanjani of having Karbaschi at Cabinet meetings. In April of 1998 Conservatives were able to instigate corruption charges which resulted in Karbaschi's arrest. In July 1998 he was jailed after being sentenced to five years. Free on appeal the sentence reduced to two years
in December 1998. Karbaschi serving the two years in may of 98. On January 25, 2000 at the behest of Former President Rafsanjani, Karbaschi was pardoned by Ayatollah Khamenei . The provision that he cannot run for office for 10 years is apparently still in effect.

The Servants of Construction (Khedmatgazaran-e Sazandegi) is now the Executives of Construction or Kargozaran-e Sazandegi

Either Karbaschi was corrupt or he was framed. It is popularly believed that Karbaschi was a victim of a Conservative effort to derail the 2nd of Khordad movement by eliminating key players.

"Karbaschi was educated at Tehran University in the Faculty of Science, then continued his Islamic Studies in Qom and was active during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He is a former governor of the Province of Esfahan and was appointed Mayor of Tehran in 1989. His reforms of the city of Tehran have been internationally recognized, and his newspaper Hamshari (Fellow Citizens) contributed enormously to the growth of civil society in Iran and encouraged political participation of women and youth in the 1997 election of President Khatami. He is also the founder of the moderate political party, Kargozaran Sazandegi." http://iran-leaders.blogspot.com/null
