Sotheby's has posted their London Spring Sale Catalog

Here are 4 that caught my eye. Jacqueline Coulter has done a great job and it is the prettiest catalog I ever saw. Congratulations to Mary Jo Otsea on being Sotheby's "World Wide head of Carpet"

Notes on Anatolian Gelveri Rugs

Saturday at Keshishian's An Old Yastik sort of 25th of February 2006

The main motif of thie Keshishian yastik appears in The famous Turkmen Rug From the Ulu Mosque in Divrigi that figured so prominiently in Dr. JonThompson's central argument in the 1980 classic "Turkmen". Interestingly enough Harold Keshishian was instrumental in picking Thompson to co-write Turkmen and Harold also designed the dust jacket of that landmark book.

Guide To Gabbeh Rugs - the Weavers

One of my very best friends, Dr. Khosrow Sobhe with his brothers produce great Gabbehs made by Qashqai weavers in Fars Province. He has been kind enough to share pictures of the weavers who make his rugs.

Holiday Party at the Keshishian's

R. John Howe has done a nice article on Harold and Melissa Keshishian's Christmas party for the Hajji Babas. God bless those Keshishians you could go a long way before you could find nicer, more knowledgeable people, with a better collection than Harold and Melissa. Plus when you add in Wendel Swan and the other Hajjis it is a real treat. A small note about John Howe. I am amazed how far he has come in the last 10 years. At one point John was just an enthusiastic collector but I notice that lately John has emerged as the leading light among the regulars on Turkotek As the group ages and the old crowd slows down or stops participating John stands out as someone who does the reading, sees the rugs and is still thinking. With the newer ones give them 10 years and maybe someone else will start to shine. In the mean time I am trying to understand their Mongol rug discussion.

Guide to Persian Salt bags

It is at least a start. I thought it might be meaningful to look at these as a group rather only on an ethno-linguistic basis. It was helpful for me since I found far more Jaf Kurd and Sanjabi Kurd examples than I expected.

I spent a little time reorganizing my

Notes on Transylvanian Rugs

I was thinking about Charlie Ellis' theory that Transylvanian or Siebenburgan rugs as he was wont to call them were from that area of present day Romania. I have backed away from that position for the most part but not totally.

Perhaps the greatest King of my lifetime is His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. It is fitting that he commissioned one of the greatest carpets ever woven.

Rug Cleaning Seminar At Esber Rug

I remember one odd duck who claimed that Bijar rugs were not really Kurdish. He never really understood the Kurds or their rugs. I really enjoyed the fellows logic, he like Kurdish rugs, so rugs he did not like couldn't be Kurdish. This was completely seperate from the ethnicity of the weaver. In his theory Kurdish weavers could weave non-Kurdish rugs.

When quoting please supply a link back to this site.

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote, "Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster and if you gaze into the abyss the abyss gazes into you.

I suppose if we gaze into the abyss we might see Nietzsche gazing back. Man separate from God does not need to fear becoming a monster. He already is one. Without God man has no way to measure his own depravity. Good is only good in relation to God. If you choose to define good on your own terms then you are your own god.

Martin Niemoeller
First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews but I was not Jewish so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.

Martin Niemoeller was a W.W.II era German Lutheran Pastor active in the Confessing Church (Bekennende Kirche) Movement in the face of Nazi oppression in Germany in the 1930s and 40s. While there is much to commend in his life it is sad that Niemoeller was theologically liberal. This quote tends to differ slightly depending on the source. I am now convinced that this became a stock phrase in countless Niemoeller speech up until his death.

I find it interesting that people read this stuff and react to it. A handful of people have been upset by my calling Niemoeller "theologically liberal". Just what does "theologically liberal" mean? Books have been written on that subject while only scratching the surface but let me give a short version. It comes down to ones source of Authority. A liberal will take the Word of God and interpret it though a higher authority such as "Historical Criticism" or "Reason"or "Tradition". When one takes a "higher authority" even if it is their own eyes or "scientific proof" then that "higher authority" is in effect their God. If you worship any god other than the God of the Bible then you are not a Christian. I am sad to say that many people who attend Christian Churches are not Christian and are actually worshiping false gods.
