Description This
old yastik, with its blend of catma and pile
tradition, has compositional similarity to plate
#60 of Brian Morehouse's outstanding book on
Anatolian pile yastiks. Morehouse suggests that
the medallion-and-saf leaf design and the
minimalist border conform to the catma tradition.
While the rendering of the principal design
motifs suggests a tie to Anatolian carpets.
There are, however, some interesting and
significant differences. This example is less
formatted and is perhaps more compatible with a
pre-commercial heritage. The lappets, for
example, are not missing from the weaving's top,
they were simply not part of the original work.
In plate #60 (Morehouse) the secondary motifs are
distributed in a very symmetrical manner. Here,
their placement is more whimsical, yet
uncluttered in appearance.
