JBOC Notes:
Catalog Discription:
Anatolian
Yastik, Central Anatolia
Size 23" x 43"
Date 1875 -1900
Cat. No. 272
Description Because of their utilitarian nature surviving yastiks
whether pile or flat weave, are few. Flat woven yastiks have proven to
be extremely rare. Here, the field has a pleasing symmetry and
compositional balance. There are elongated panels or saf leaves, each
containing reciprocal 'animal heads'. There are blue and yellow
diamonds in an infinite repeat. The dyes are from all natural sources.
They are strong and deeply saturated.
Condition: The yastik is mounted on cloth backing. There are areas of
wear, primarily in the borders.
Price $3,500.00
Comments I originally came upon this yastik in the late - 1900's. It
was on the wall in a home in Istanbul. I wanted to buy it. The owner
did not want to sell. Some years later, the owner contacted me and
offered the piece. The price, however, was prohibitive. I was unable to
buy. It was eventually purchased by a dealer, who in need of capital
eventually sold it to me at a price substantially below the original
asking price. I am passing on my saving in this price.
