Amritsar Rugs
are among the best
of 19th century Indian rugs. The rugs are
similar to Agra
carpets but tended to be sheered a touch finer than Agra
rugs. The main
producers were mainly British and American so the designs tend to
reflect the
best of classical Persian, Turkish and Mughal designs, Because the rugs
were
made for the export market there is a good selection of large and
palace size
rugs.
Amritsar
was the main
weaving center of
Punjab and was about 50 miles from Lahore
the
capitol of Punjab.
Amritsar
never developed the reputation of Agra
since Agra rugs were
sold as Agra
rugs but Amritsar
rugs were sold under a variety of different names that were trade names
developed by the British producers rather than by the place of origin.
