Guide to Lori Pambak Kazak Rug, Armenia

Lori Rug

A Lori Pambak Kazak Rug circa 1900 Lot 33

At the risk of irratating my readers in Azeribaijan I think Lori Pambak Kazak Rug are the product of Armenian weavers at leat since circa 1800. Before that they may have been Lori, Persian or Azeri but in 1806 the Russian ruled the Lori Pambak area and actively encouraaged Armenians to settle in that area. From 1806 to 1828 the Qajar Persians ruled the Khanate of Erevan but the Russians ruled everythong north of that which included Pambak.

.It does not seem reasonable to this writer to assume that every rug with the characteristic Lori Pambak central medallion should automatically be called Lori Pambak. This rug to the right Lori Pambak Kazak circa 1890 surfaced at a Sotheby's auction last year and was attributed to Lori Pambak. I suggest here that the Kiamagly area near Lambalo in Gardabani is more appropriate.
